Map of the Republic of Texas and North America circa 1836, Paris

This delicately engraved map was originally published the first year of Texas Independence. A wealth of information is recorded throughout North America and the Caribbean - most notably Indian tribes, unexplored areas and topographic details.
The Independent Republic of Texas is shown in the configuration that reflects the original land grants given by Spain and Mexico, therefore the southern border is the Nueces River, giving Texas the rare "strawberry" configuration rather than the later version with the border being the Rio Grande. The earliest towns and settlements in Texas such as San Felipe de Austin, the capital of Austin’s colony, are listed.
Fine details such as primitive wagon routes and historic notations throughout North America are included. Alaska is noted as a Russian Possession, and significant portions of Inland California are marked as unknown lands. The American Claim to most of British Columbia is also shown. This map is a beautiful portrait of a dynamic time in the history of Texas and North America.
