Defiance and Grace -  A proud evergreen pine, its needles etched against a crisp white field, stands resolute at the center - a sentinel of liberty rooted in the rugged soil of early American resolve. Above it, the bold black words "An Appeal to Heaven" invoke divine justice against tyranny.

Born in the crucible of the American Revolution, the Appeal to Heaven flag was first flown in 1775 by the fledgling American navy under George Washington’s command. Col. Joseph Reed, Washington's aide-de-camp, is credited with its creation.

Reed wrote to the captains of the new American navy, “Please to fix upon some particular color for a flag, and a signal by which our vessels may know one another. What do you think of a flag with a white ground, a tree in the middle, the motto ‘Appeal to Heaven?’ This is the flag of our floating batteries.”

Its design draws from the rugged Pine Tree flag, a symbol of New England’s fierce independence, and its motto echoes the words of philosopher John Locke: when earthly justice fails, an appeal to heaven remains.

For the colonists, this was no mere slogan - it was a rallying cry, a declaration that their fight for liberty was sanctioned by a higher power, beyond the reach of kings.

As British oppression tightened, the flag soared above ships and and over battlefields including Bunker Hill and the Battle of Boston, a beacon for those who dared to challenge an empire.

It fluttered in the winds of the Atlantic, carried by privateers who struck at the heart of royal dominance. It stood firm in the face of cannon fire, embodying the unbreakable will of a people who refused to bow. The pine tree, an emblem of strength and eternity, reminded patriots that their cause was as enduring as the land they fought for.

Today, our 100% hand-painted reproduction of the Appeal to Heaven flag is more than a relic - it is a living testament to the courage that birthed a nation. It stirs the soul with its call to stand for principle, to seek justice, and to hold fast to hope in the face of overwhelming odds.

Hang it high, and let it sing of freedom’s price, its message as urgent now as it was in the shadow of revolution.
