This is a unique Original Texas Land Grant for 928 acres on San Francisco Creek, a tributary of the Rio Grande, in what was then Buchel County. The land was granted to E. L. Gage, a graduate of Dartmouth College, who hailed from Vermont. Edward moved to Texas where he established large ranches and began accumulating land for the railroad that was to be built through Marathon. Edward’s younger brother Alfred was lured to Texas by the glowing letters written by Edward. Alfred joined Edward in Texas and later helped manage his holdings. Finding any comfortable place to stay in the Marathon area, even in private homes, was a great challenge for Alfred. As a result Alfred built a hotel bearing the family name, the Gage Hotel, in 1927 along the rail line through Marathon on the land that Edward helped acquire.
