Description

The Spanish Conquistadors established control of the American Southwest centuries before the other European powers and before the American Colonists became interested in the region. The Spanish exploration and settlements were confined to old Mexico, the Pacific Coast, and the Rio Grande Valley – of which Santa Fe was the Northern Colonial Capital. Before 1800 the vast interior reaches had only been seen by a handful of Europeans including Cortez and LaSalle. What would become Texas was still “Terra Incognita” or, as shown on this map, “Great Space of Land Unknown.” Along the Texas Seacoast, the site of the French Explorer LaSalle’s camp is recorded, remnants of which were only recently discovered.
