Description

Issued by the City of San Antonio, this 20 year $1,000 Gold Coupon Bond paid 4%. The owner would clip one of the accompanying coupons every six months and would be paid $20 interest in gold coins by his or her bank.

Investors who owned these bonds would make regular visits to their banks to cut out and redeem the coupons and collect their interest, so the wealthy citizens of this era became known as “Coupon Clippers.”
