This rare English map Texas, California and Mexico is beautifully engraved with a hand colored border. Texas is shown in the Republic configuration with the western border depicted as the Rio Grande River to its source, a claim established by the treaty Santa Anna signed after his defeat at the battle of San Jacinto. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos were all within the official borders of the Republic of Texas. The vast Independent Republic of Texas fascinated Europeans. Several unique early Texas towns are included such as Swartwout, Nashville, Waco Village, Bevilport, Lavala, Texana, Fort Houston, Aquaverde, Orozimbo (this was a large sugar cane plantation in Brazoria County) and Tenoxtillan. There is a wealth of fascinating information marked in Texas such a Native American tribes, mountain ranges, towns, rivers and Spanish presidios. Upper California also offers numerous interesting features, most specifically a colored and labeled Gold Region extending along the Sacramento River as far south as an over sized Lake Tule and Santa Cruz. The historic California gold rush is brought to life with an intricate vignette of gold washing. Early routes through the American West are shown such as the “Great Caravan Route” used by covered wagons during the westward expansion. There is great detail in Old Mexico as well. John Tallis was known for his intricate decorative borders and vignettes. This highly desirable and captivating map is truly an artistic and historic portrait of the legendary Southwest.
