In the early decades of statehood, Texas enjoyed spectacular growth as settlers from back east poured in seeking new opportunities. The railroads opened many areas across the iconic State allowing for more movement and potential business captivating entrepreneurs from far and wide.  Early towns, cities and counties were established in Texas in part due to the ever expanding system of transportation, and they are marked on this detailed map. The system of wagon roads and railroads are noted as well as rivers, creeks, forts, and topographical features. The Llano Estacado or Staked Plains (one of the largest mesas or tablelands in North America) are marked in West Texas. Indian tribes are also noted in Texas such as the Kiowa and Comanches.  An inset of Galveston Bay is featured - the main port and commercial center of Texas until the great hurricane of 1900, when Houston became the economic giant of Texas.

This fine map reflects the relative expansion of the counties of Texas, with more or less the current configurations in the east but very few in the less populated west. There is a wealth of information included on the dynamic growth of the young state and surrounding areas such as the Indian Territory to the north and Mexico to the south.

This iconic map of Texas features a stunning hand tinted intricate border that was a unique style of the New York map maker A. J. Jonson.
