Description

The 1824 Constitution of Mexico joined Texas with Coahuila to form the state of Coahuila y Tejas. This is the flag of the state of Coahuila y Tejas used in the 1820s and 1830s.  The Mexican tricolor is accompanied by two stars to represent the regions of Coahuila and Tejas. It is believed that this is one of the flags flown at the Alamo. Both Colonel Juan Almonte, aid to Santa Anna, and Carlos Sanchez-Navarro, a Mexican officer and engineer, make reference to this flag in their memoirs. The political landscape of Mexico changed dramatically due to Santa Anna’s rise to power in 1835.  He quickly assumed dictatorial powers and abrogated large parts of the Mexican Constitution. In Chihuahua and the other northern states of Mexico, the resentment of Santa Anna’s dictatorship was especially strong. Both Coahuila and Texas seceded from Mexico because of Santa Anna’s attempts to centralize the government, with Texas forming the Republic of Texas and Coahuila joining with Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas to form the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande.
