Description

The Illustrated London News was the world’s first illustrated weekly news magazine.

The Republic of Texas was of great interest to European powers as a prosperous place of opportunity as well as political and personal freedom. A fanciful view depicts Houston as the thriving idyllic Capital of Texas. The Original Capital of Texas was at Harrisburg on Buffalo Bayou near present day Houston. These decorative hand tinted views published in London illustrate the prominence of Houston and surrounding areas in the history of the Republic of Texas. In the top view, Texas troops are shown proudly exhibiting to a large group of patriotic citizens near the fertile rolling hills. The port of Galveston was the main port for the Texas Navy and an important commercial and political center.
