Description

This is perhaps the Best Early Texas Statehood Map. The growth Texas enjoyed in the first five years of statehood is remarkable, a veritable gold rush on the plains. This map notes important features for prospective settlers, such as: Rolling Table Lands, Large Droves of Wild Horses and Cattle, Fine Fertile District, as well as Salt Plains, Comanche and Apache Indians. Early Texas towns are listed as well as roads, forts and rivers. Highlights on the Census of 1850 are displayed on a table in the lower left, including notations: “Manufacturing establishments producing $500 and upwards yearly: 307 – Federal Representative Population: 189,327”.

This has become an extremely scarce map because of the wealth of historical details it contains. It is an intriguing window into life on the early Texas frontier.
