Great Seal Flag, 1782
The Great Seal Flag, 1782

The Great Seal of the United States can be traced back to the very day the Declaration of Independence was signed. A select committee, including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, was formed to choose a design. As the seal evolved, use of it and its variations became a popular feature of many flags. Because the Stars and Stripes was considered at the time to be primarily a naval flag design, the land forces quickly adopted the American Eagle as their emblem, and it appeared on many of the regimental colors.

It was not until the Mexican American War, 70 years after the Stars and Stripes was adopted as the official flag of the American government that soldiers of the United States were allowed to carry it into battle. Flags of the Eagle design also played interesting roles in the history of the American frontier. A Great Seal flag was carried by the Chickasaw Indians fighting the British with Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, and their leader was later decorated by President Adams. A similar design, but with a peace-pipe in place of the usual olive branch, was used by John Fremont on his expedition in 1846 to California.
